Meet the Maker: Alison Macleod

What inspired you to start making jewellery?

I am sure that my childhood fascination with my Mum’s jewellery box had something to do with my career choice. I would sneak into her room, rummage through what seemed to me like a treasure chest and try on the rings, necklaces and brooches.  

Are there any artists you particularly admire, and who inspire or influence your work?

I am drawn to the work of the early rennaissance painter Giotto with his design-like simplicity and graduating colours. I find the energy in Joan Eardly’s Scottish landscapes invigorating. And I would only aspire to achieve the spontaneity found in Cy Twombly’s work. 

Tell us about the collection you’re presenting in Meet Your Maker.

In this work I aim to reflect the unconventional beauty I see in the discarded utilitarian object. I have combined my silver clusters with found objects to create a balanced intensity.

What are your plans for the future?

I would love to continue making and selling one-off jewellery pieces. 

What is your favourite piece of craft that you own?

My Alison Willoughby skirt is a current favourite. I wear it every so often but the rest of the time it hangs on the bedroom wall like the piece of art it is.
